Thoughts about Europe

Europe with a human face
The European Union was originated as a peace process and further developed as an economic union, becoming a driving force for an increased standard of living. It is now time to proceed towards a Europe of people, which guarantees the respect of human rights, equal opportunities for all, social inclusion and the access to high quality services.

In order to guarantee public services of high quality, the renewed Social Agenda as well as the Charter for Fundamental rights are of central importance. It would be important for the European Union institutions to improve transparency when it comes to their functions, and increase the public access to their reports.

In my opinion, citizens play a key role in Europe, hence the need to further involve organisations and citizens in the community decision-making process, from the preparatory phase of the work onwards.

Prosperous Europe

The objectives in terms of peace, stability and prosperity are still up-to-date in the European Union. Even after the introduction of the internal market and of the single currency, there is still a lot left to do when it comes to economic stability and growth.

Objectives and strategies, such as the Lisbon strategy, are not enough. We need an enhanced surveillance of the financial sector, obligations in terms of solvability as well as transparency in Europe and worldwide.

It would also be crucial to reinforce cooperation and the negotiation procedures between employees and trade unions, in order to contribute to the stabilisation of growth. Then, it would be significant to invest more in the education and research sectors, in particular in green business, in order for the cradle of the industrial revolution to remain a pioneer as far as knowledge and innovation are concerned. This is where the key to success lies!

Environment friendly Europe

Decision-makers of the next years will hold the destiny of the earth in their hands, the main question being whether the latter will be viable for the generations to come. The needed information concerning environmental issues is already available to us. Technological and economic data concerning the response to these issues exist as well. Political will is thus at the core of the environmental challenges.

Europe shall build an ecologically sustainable model in terms of way of life, transport, production and consumption, as well as the economic and legislative tools which will allow the shift towards this model. We owe it to our citizens and to our children.  Ambitious actions, by setting the environmental policy at the core of the priorities of the common external policies, are the only way that will allow us to reach international agreements.

Global Europe

The third era of the European Union, after the first era of peace and the second of the economic union, is the one of globalisation, driving force of prosperity. The European Union can not give responses on its own to issues concerning prosperity, fair economic competition, the environment or security. The common mission of the European Union shall thus be the reinforcement and the reform of multilateral negotiation procedures on the international level, starting by the ILO, the United Nations, Bretton Woods II, the WTO and the new environmental organisation of the United Nations.

The EU is a great hub of influence through its support to organisations, and it acts through the individual actions of each of them. The response to the global challenge of the EU depends on the ability to realise expectations and common values.
